The Morning After
by Serena Kim

Diddy_backstage The Hip Hop Honors were definitely worth the wait. The performances were live, the clothes were great, the old Hammerstein looked all gussied up, and the vibe permeating the air was full of warmth and respect. But you know, I gotta ask my little questions:

1. Why did it seem like Tracy Morgan was actually dissing the Beastie Boys instead of giving them props in his introduction?
2. Who knew Regina King had so much flavor still?
3. Why were the last two finalists for Freestyle 59 so morose?
4. Where the hell was Ghostface Killah?
5. Why was Wu Tang's tribute so short?
6. What sense does it make for Rakim to be wearing a DC shoes fitted cap in his interview?
7. Didn't Raekwon and Ice Cube look like they were separated at birth sitting next to each other?
8. Why oh why Dub C?
9. Wasn't seeing Diddy, Q-Tip, and Fabolous dressed up as the Beastie Boys eerily satisfying?
10. Like that's how the Beastie Boys should've looked all along?
11. Why didn't the Game also pay tribute to Eazy-E when he was one of the most vocal admirers and quite possibly responsible for the recent resurgence in his popularity?
12. Was the crazy member of Bone Thugs there?
13. Didn't it seem like Q-tip wanted to wear those old school glasses frames all the time from here on out as part of his look?
14. Isn't Kid Capri the greatest DJ who ever lived?
15. Couldn't Mixmaster Mike learn a thing or two from Capri? Not that Mike isn't great, but turntablism never rocks a party.
16. Didn't Lil Kim look like an adorable Oompa Loompa in her Sergio Tacchini suit?
17. Is MC Lyte really the greatest female emcee ever?
18. What about Yoyo?
19. Why was Black Thought called in for so many performances?
20. Wasn't Lil Eazy the spitting image of his father?
21. Why was Method Man menacing Ice-T with that weird bump towards the end?

This truly was a great show. For a while there I almost forgot why I fell in love with this music in the first place. Every honoree deserved to be honored. The Wu-Tang Clan tribute was long overdue because so many people act like from 1994 to 1997 they didn't have the whole hip-hop world in their grasp. My only gripes are the fact that Ghostface was no where to be found (I hope that's not due to any beefs within the group), the Wu-Tang tribute was way too short (can you tell that i'm a Wu-Tang fan?), and why the hell did they let Young Jeezy in the building. Peace to the gods man.

P.S. If Nas hasn't been honored yet, give him, Common, and Russell their own 2 hour tribute. And REhonor the Wu-Tang Clan like they deserve to be honored.

Why doesn't one of the best and most popular rap group Whodini get any props whatsoever. i can't believe they would honor Mc Lyte or the Wu-tang clan before Whodini.

Everything was cool. It's nice seeing folks come together for one purpose...How Hip-Hop and Rap began and how it has evolved. Hopefully next time there will be less honorees so everyone can get there time to be in the light.
Let hip-hop put away the trash talkers and big the PAIN! That's how it all began and that will always be the foundation of todays new artists!
Much Love..........

It was good to see all the honorees and everything. But I think there was one person who didnt get any attention. Nas. Nas is one of the greatest rappers of all time and it seems like they forgot him

I understand saving the best for last, but I am a little disappointed that Wu Tang's tribute was so short. Those nine motherfuckers deserve their OWN 2HR TRIBUTE. They are like the fantasy football team of HIP HOP it truly gets NO BETTER.
Witty Unpredictable Talent And Natural Game that pretty much sums it up.

I could close my eyes and be Back In Tha Day...that was one sweet show! I think everyone that was honored should've been honored, some of the greats were missed for sure, but the list could go on an on, they gotta stop somewhere. NWA, Cube, T, Wu, Capri, everyone - seriously great. Love the music, miss the music, will never forget the music. We Want EAZY!

today is my 45th birthday and last night watching the show and going back to what was the music that molded and changed so much and seeing the changes that my gansta rappers have isnpired i wonder if todays generation truly gets it and feels
how positive and powerfull these legends are, i am so honored to have all of it as a part of my own past to have raised my children that by the time they were four knew every word to planet rock and
blasting wu tang clan on the way to school (kindergarten) exposing them to listening to people's truths and struggles and words that bond us all together, give it up to the beastie boys for being true to themselves and not trying to be anything else than lyrical i
found a new respect for them in their intro last night great choice for kicking off the show. I was feeling old and sad yesterday and watching the show made me reflect on the positive changes i have made in my life just giving up my own little hussle days and making better choices didnt become famous but heard and related to so many of my musical idols and i am proud to be a part and have lived and experienced this with you all and truly thank you i know if i live to be ninety and was in a coma and somebody played planet rock it would bring me back!!!!!!!!

Enjoyed the show....but when Lil Eazy came out, chills went down my spine...it was like looking at Eazy E all over again. He represented his father to the fullest.... he's a splitting image of his father.

Your comments and questions were really on point except when you asked if Mixmaster Mike from the Beastie Boys could learn from Kid Capri, because turntabilsm never rocked a party! You obviously did not grow up in the eightiesm nor went to a real hip hop party, or show back then, because mixing and scratching always was one of the highlights and Mixmaster Mike did like we did it back in the day!!! Kid Capri is more from the nineties when DJ's starting doing all that talking along with working the turntables, but back in the eighties, Jam Master Jay, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Cut Creater, Bobcat, Spinderella, etc., did not do awhole lot of talking, because they were working the turntables. So, it depends on your level of knowledge of hip hop culture and its roots, on whether you know what rocks a party!!!

I'm totally east coast born and bred,
so to honor MC Lyte, no brainer,
Rakim, all day,
Wu Tang, but of course!

But to be honest, I totally overlooked Eazy E,
Ice Cube and the rest of NWA
in regards to their contributions.
I have the utmost respect for NWA
and one walk down memory lane brought it all back.
I couldn't contain myself.
I was chanting "Eazy, we want Eazy!".
And we really do now that he's gone.
The only thing that could have made that more rewarding to me,
would have been seeing Dr Dre there to enjoy the moment also.
NWA did for the west what PE did for the east.
They were NEWS baby.
You couldn't stop the movement if you wanted to.
Many tried and failed.

I fell in love with hip hop during the golden era of
fat gold chains, b-boy stances, break beats,
tight dark ink jeans, and fat shoe laces.
And last night took me back to the essence, an industry free,
very opinionated time in young urban music.
And I'm happy to say that I still love H.E.R.

that was an amzing show ~ the first year was the best however it is still a good show...there needs to be a hip hop honors cd with music from all the honorees. I was open off of the MC Lyte tribute...wow, to how those female emcees (Kim, da brat and remy) came together and really paid tribute to Lyte...it was great!!!!

I feel u Kenneth whodini has been long overlooked in the hip hop game for too many years, Run-Dmc Fat-Boys and then Whodini i don't understand why they are overlooked when it comes to old school hip hop groups, they were ground breaking and had a lot of hits as well freaks come out at night, friends, one love funky beat just to name a few. I came up during the fresh fest concerts and whodini was always there next year lets get it right vh1 and give whodini their just do!

Alfattah says:

Show was and I gotta go back to the old school it was funky fresh in the flesh..... Common dropped knowledge the best when he said I'm Still Following The Leader.... Rakim is the Greatest MC of all time..... He truly changed the game..... When it comes to Lyrics the only other person who even comes close is the Blast Master KRS-ONE..... No disrespect to Biggie, Pac, Nas or Jay-Z......But when it comes to true lyricist...... No one can touch those two.....They must learn.... like KRS-ONE said and they still wont be able to Move The Crowd....... McLyte did her thing as well....... And I'm sorry but Easy-E's son is his spitting image kid you represted your father well and he would be proud........Time to honor Slick Rick Doug E. Fresh and I agree with someone who posted somthing earlier what about Whodini........

I was totally dejected by the way they dissed Wu-Tang. That screwed up the whole show and made this the worst Hip-Hop Honors Show yet. Beasties, Russell, Lyte, Cube, Little Eazy, KRS's intro for Bambataa, even the intro for the Wu were all classic moments. Then, BAM! Somebody didn't do their job right counting the seconds and we got robbed of what we all knew was going to be a classic moment in time. Just like the Foley scandal, somebody should get fired.
